from shoes baby shoes

from there to here hear
the shoes of blind children shoes
shuffling tripping a blind child falls into a cement mixer
a deaf child is crushed by the ambulance racing to the blind child who is
   the child of some dumb man who makes shoes

that evening he cries over a piece of leather stained with milk
the tear marks make a pattern he tries to read to read
he wants to cut the leather into the shape of a gingerbread man

he wants very much to have his child back
to ride on the cows back
